Reason for asking

England & Wales and Scotland (2011) comparisons

The Gaelic language question asked in Scotland's Census 2022 improved on the 2011 question both online and on paper following phases of question testing. These differences should be taken into account when comparing results between 2011 and 2022 censuses. The full 2022 and 2011 household questionnaires are available on the Scotland’s Census website. In addition to this, more detailed guidance was provided in 2022 than 2011. The impact of this on the results was limited as the guidance was available on a separate webpage and was accessed by a relatively small proportion of those responding.

This question was not asked in England & Wales.
