Source question or variables
Individual question 6: Are you a schoolchild or student in full-time education?
- Yes
- No
Reason for asking
This information helps to identify students and schoolchildren in order to ensure they are counted as resident at their term-time address. Counting people at their term-time address is important because it helps to provide an accurate measure of the usually resident population. This is the basis used by central and local government for planning.
The information on term-time addresses of students is also used to plan services and allocate resources, for example to analyse the demand for student accommodation (such as halls of residence and household accommodation).
England & Wales (2021) and Scotland (2011) comparison
This variable is broadly comparable to the version created by ONS for the 2021 census in England & Wales (in_full_time_education).
In England & Wales, people aged five years and over were asked to answer the question. In Scotland however, only people aged four years and over were asked to answer the question.
This variable is directly comparable to the version created for Scotland's census 2011 as the question has remained the same.
