Intersex and trans status or history

December 18 2024

In December 2024 we published data for the categories used in our trans status or history coding framework. When preparing this data it was apparent that people who wrote in ‘intersex’ had been coded into the ‘Other trans status or history’ category. This affected a small number of records (less than 20).

We have made a change to be consistent with stakeholder feedback before the census. We were told that people who identify as ‘intersex’ or with 'differences of sex development' or ‘variations in sex characteristics’ should not be counted as trans people by default. We have reclassified all responses in the ‘intersex’ group into the ‘No - not trans and does not have trans history’ category.

Our data tables, report, and quality assurance report have been updated to reflect this change.

Imputation rates

1 August 2024

The level of imputation for Gaelic and Scots language proficiency was over-stated in the initial release of imputation rates.

An issue in the automatic coding of paper questionnaires, where responses are matched to classifications, meant that a number of records were incorrectly flagged as non-responding for these questions. This correction has resulted in a decrease in the percentage of overall imputed for Gaelic language proficiency of 2.55%, and a decrease in the percentage of overall imputed for Scots language proficiency of 0.12%.

Some small corrections have also been made for other variables in the ethnic group, national identity, language and religion topics where inconsistencies in how imputed records for communal establishment responses were counted in the initial release. These corrections resulted in a change in the imputation rates of 0.01% at most.

There has been no change to the published census outputs as they were not affected.

Country of birth

5 July 2024

An error was discovered in the original versions of two tables published as part of the 'Ethnic group, national identity, language and religion' release on 21 May 2024. The tables effected were:

  • UV204a - Country of birth (24) by sex by age (20)
  • UV204b - Country of birth (14) by sex by age (6)

There were 115,406 people incorrectly counted in “Europe: Other Europe: EU countries: Accession countries April 2011 to March 2022” rather than “Europe: Other Europe: EU countries: Other member countries in March 2022”.

No other tables or data were affected, and these tables have now been corrected.
