An easy read version of our marketing campaign summary document.
Scotland’s Census is the way we count how many people live in Scotland.
The census usually takes place every 10 years. It asks questions about:
- Your age
- Your sex
- Your home and where you live
- Your work
- Your education and qualifications
- Your ethnicity
It is very important to complete the census.
The information helps the Scottish Government and other service providers to make important decisions.
These decisions affect people’s lives and their communities.
They help to decide how money can be spent on important services in communities.
These are things like:
- Education
- Housing
- Healthcare
- Roads and railways
Census Day is Sunday 20 March.
You can complete your census online as soon as you receive your letter.
Your answers must match what is happening in your house on Sunday 20 March.
You can complete your census online or you can ask for a paper copy.
From the end of February, you will get a letter.
It will tell you how to complete your census online.
The census completion website will be live from 28 February 2022.
- Visit www.census.gov.scot
- Click START
- Enter the unique Internet Access Code from the letter you received
- Follow the instructions on the screen

The law says every house in Scotland must complete the census.
This helps to make sure we have the correct information about everyone living in Scotland.
The person who completes the census is someone who either:
- Owns the house
- Rents the house
- Pays the household bills
You will need to complete an individual census and take part in a communal establishment questionnaire if you are over 16 and live in:
- A care home
- Halls of residence
- A hostel
The census completion website will be open from 28 February 2022.

Census data is not published for 100 years.
