Source question or variables

Household question 9: How many bedrooms are available for use only by this household. Include all rooms built or converted for use as bedrooms.

Reason for asking

This information is used to help central and local government assess changes in overcrowding. It provides data to help identify households in unsuitable accommodation, to tackle deprivation, develop appropriate housing policies, plan future housing provision and allocate resources.

England & Wales (2022) and Scotland (2011) comparison

This question is the same as the one asked by ONS for the 2022 census in England & Wales.

In Scotland's Census 2011, this question asked about the total number of rooms in a household rather than bedrooms. As such, this variable is not comparable with 2011 data.
