Household deprivation

  • Mnemonic reference

    DEPHSHUK

  • Applicability

All occupied household spaces, England, Wales and Scotland

Definition

This derived variable is an indicator of household deprivation in the housing dimension. A household is defined as deprived in the housing dimension if it is either overcrowded (actual number of rooms minus rooms 'required' (see ROOMREQ) is –1 or less) OR is in a shared dwelling OR does not have sole use of a bath / shower or toilet OR does not have central heating.

This variable is not available in Northern Ireland because of the risk of confusion with existing deprivation measures.
