Source question or variables

Do you consider yourself to be trans, or have a trans history?

  • No
  • Yes, please describe your trans status (for example, non-binary, trans man, trans woman)

(This was a voluntary question for people aged 16 and over.)

Reason for asking

The trans status or history question was developed in direct response to identified data user need for information on the size and location of the trans population in Scotland.

England & Wales and Scotland (2011) comparison

Scotland’s Census included a new question on trans status or history in 2022. This means we do not have comparable data for previous censuses.

The census in England and Wales asked a question on gender identity in 2021:

"Is the gender you identify with the same as your sex registered at birth?

  • Yes
  • No, write in gender identity"

Further information on the data from the two different questions is available in our quality assurance report.
